I Am Alert - Daily Confessional Reader # 1
Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. - 1 Corinthians 16:13 CSB
“I am alert” “a state of careful watching and readiness, especially for danger or opportunity, quick to perceive and act” - Webster’s Dictionary
What does it mean to be alert, and how can men be alert in an age of unlimited information and distractions. To be alert I must be proactive. I must take a proactive approach to many aspects of modern life. Media. Your television. Your phone. Your inbox. Your social media. Your subscriptions. Your sources of information. Your friendships. Your children’s friendships. Your wife’s friendships.
A good litmus test for how addicted to media you are is measured by this question, ‘Can you sit on the toilet without your mobile device?’ Can you be alert when you are constantly being distracted by alerts and notifications? You must proactively remove or silence notifications on your mobile devices and computers. You may need to unsubscribe from emails that constantly distract you from your inbox.

This is your confession, “I AM ALERT.”
"Be of sober spirit, be on the alert.” - 1 Peter 5:8 NASB
“Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;” -Colossians 4:2 NASB
“so then, let’s not sleep as others do, but let’s be alert and sober.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:6 NASB
“Be constantly alert, and strengthen the things that remain,” - Revelations 3:2 NASB
It’s easy for men to take a back seat in our culture. It’s easy to let things go, turn on Netflix, and be entertained while your wife and children are going down other paths, living other lives. It’s easy to not be intentional. Just be a laid-back dad, content to sit on the couch or deck and give in to the pull of the current of the river of modern affluent America. Or worse, buy into the lie that it is ok to escape reality with the use of convenient substances.
Wake up, man. I speak this into my life. I choose to believe that I am capable of being alert in Christ.
“So then, let’s not sleep as others do.”
“I AM ALERT!” I am in tune with God’s spirit. I am inviting Him to open my eyes to see what is happening all around me. I am alert to see beyond myself and the lure of convenience and entertainment. My alertness prompts me to take action. To silence toxic voices in my head, home, and heart.
